Aquila Clean Energy obtains environmental permits for 1,760 MW abd consolidates its commitment to Spain

– Favourable environmental impact statements for more than 30 renewable energy projects in five autonomous communities

– The projects that have obtained environmental approval are located in Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Murcia and Cantabria

– These projects will involve a total investment of more than €1.9 billion, generate clean energy for more than 930,000 homes and avoid the emission of approximately 917,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere

Madrid, 09 March 2023 – Aquila Clean Energy, a company that develops and operates clean energy assets with a focus on solar and wind, has strengthened its portfolio of solar and wind projects in Spain by obtaining environmental impact statements (EISs) for more than 1,760 MW of installed capacity. Having gained approvals from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and regional governments, the company has secured the future of a total of 33 projects in Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Murcia and Cantabria.

Aquila Clean Energy, which began operating in Spain in 2018, is consolidating its commitment to the country. To build these latest projects, the company estimates an investment of more than 1.9 billion euros. The energy generated, once in operation, will be sufficient to meet the estimated average annual consumption of more than 930,000 homes.

The PNIEC (National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan) foresees Spain reaching installed capacities of 50.3 GW for wind energy and 39.2 GW for solar photovoltaics by 2030. To reach this target, an additional 20 GW of each would need to be deployed over the coming years.

According to Jorge de Miguel, Head of Development and Construction at Aquila Clean Energy: “The receipt of these EISs has been a significant achievement as well as a big step towards consolidating our activity in Spain. All these projects, added to those that are at a more advanced stage, will allow us to reach 3 GW of installed renewable capacity, positioning us as one of the main players in this sector in Spain”.

The authorisations obtained ensures the environmental integration of Aquila Clean Energy’s projects in their natural surroundings.

“In addition, the localities of these projects will experience a positive social impact through taxes, land rents and the creation of local employment,” adds Jorge de Miguel.

The 33 solar and wind projects that have received environmental approval are located in Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Cantabria and Murcia.
